How Businesses Use Office Space Today

The way companies are utilizing office space has evolved since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. With people being home more and advancements in technology over the past year, remote work has become the new norm. The pandemic has left business owners and executives questioning how to proceed with office space when entire companies have spent over a year adjusting to working from home offices and kitchen tables.

As the use of office space along with employee preferences have largely shifted, companies have been forced to reevaluate their officing model. As the world emerges from the pandemic, there are four main office models that companies are beginning to embrace.

100% Back to Office

Although it may come as a surprise, having all employees back in the office full-time is still a strong preference for many employers and employees alike. Many large companies believe their success depends on in-person collaboration at a centrally located headquarters. These companies often feel that having all employees in the office not only boosts productivity but also betters the culture of the company overall.

Hub and Spoke

Another way businesses are revising their officing model is by incorporating a hybrid hub and spoke office structure. This workplace model involves a single headquarters hub as well as smaller suburban offices. Employees who wish to be or need to be onsite full time can access a centralized office, whereas other employees can work closer to home in a smaller office environment.

Hub and Home

Another popular workplace model is the hybrid hub and home model. Here, companies have one central office for employees to work onsite coupled with individuals working from home offices. Many employers want to provide their employees with greater flexibility, so choosing a hybrid office model allows for greater employee satisfaction while still having the necessary collaborative headquarters environment.

Fully Remote Office

The final office model is the fully remote office where entire companies are committed to working from home environments. After being forced to work from home over the past year, many companies see advantages in continuing to work remotely. A large percentage of employees are pushing to work from home, and no longer having to pay office rents allows companies to save money. While this may seem somewhat aggressive, fully remote offices have been in use for some time already with many tech firms and customer service-oriented businesses.

There will always be variations on these models; however, these are the four most common office structures companies are utilizing as businesses across the world are reevaluating their needs and looking for the right workplace solution for their company and employees.
